Matthew 8

21 Another disciple said to him, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

this chapter also has many familiar details of some of Jesus amazing actions during his life.  This one struck me today as just a simple statement but then in reflection what a strong statement of what it takes to truly put Jesus first and follow him.

Imagine what people would or were saying about this guy if he ran off and followed Jesus and left everyone else to tend to his own father's funereal.  Its his dad, I'm guessing his heart is crushed but Jesus is saying even taking time to bury your own dad is secondary to the work He is doing and if you are truly following him you need to be willing to put His priorities above all others.

So I need to recognize those moments I'm telling him I'll get to it after I do XY or Z and act whenever I feel his nudge to act---no hesitation.

  1. That's a great point. It always makes me bristle a little bit, when I read these verses. There's another one where Jesus is calling one of the disciples, and he tells him he wants to say goodbye to his family, and Jesus tells him the same thing.......I don't like that too much.

Here's the verse that caught my attention today. This is in reference to the demons in the men.
“Have you come here to torture us before the appointed time?”
I'm fascinated by the battle being waged, just outside of our awareness. I'm also fascinated with the thought that a battle had been waging between God and lucifer, long before Genesis even starts. This one line tells me that the demons know there is an appointed time when their reign over this world will end. Isn't that nuts? I also find it fascinating that Jesus doesn't destroy them.....he just drives them out of the men. Why not crush 'em? Send them packing? hmmmmmm.
