Genesis 34

31 But they replied, “Should he have treated our sister like a prostitute?

This time on this journey through Genesis I am not getting a very good feeling about Jacob.  He seems weak, deceiving and not even protective of his only daughter (at least only one mentioned in the bible).  I was not recalling how this ended as I was reading it.  So I was really struggling with how they were willing to strike a deal in exchange for the rape of Dinah.  Ultimately the brothers didn't let it happen, but Jacob did and was even worried after they took care of it.

How is it that Jacob becomes Israel?  I'm only seeing his negatives right now, again struggling for any lessons.  Is there something to the 3rd day--this is when the brothers wiped out the city and men they despised.

oh yeah, why is he Jacob again??  more questions than answers today

  1. I found this commentary.

    5. Jacob held his peace--Jacob, as a father and a good man, must have been deeply distressed. But he could do little. In the case of a family by different wives, it is not the father, but the full brothers, on whom the protection of the daughters devolves--they are the guardians of a sister's welfare and the avengers of her wrongs.

This is interesting to me, that the father is not the one that is expected to get revenge or protect Dinah, but the brothers are. I suppose in an environment where a man could have lots of sons and daughters, and live to be a really old age....it might make sense for the brothers to be the ones that will need to protect the sister..

not much here today for me. I agree Jacob seems to come across as a little weak, but the brothers bring the hammer! First, they convince all the men to be circumcised....then kill em? Man, that's harsh. Why not just kill em? A little extra hot-sauce on the vengeance burger.

  2. Interesting commentary. still seems strange that she was raped and they might consider a deal to smooth things over if it hadn't been for the brothers.
