Acts 19

So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?”
“John’s baptism,” they replied.
Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

So I was baptized as a baby and our church here also baptizes babies.  To become a member of our church in Bettendorf you had to be baptized by submersion and it had to be by your choice not as a baby.  The explanation was they were trying to follow to the best of their ability what was laid out in the bible.  I believe all examples of baptism in the bible have repentance and belief in God before the baptism.

I am wondering why in the Reformed Church (and many others) we baptize babies?  Is there a biblical principle for this?

any insight?

  2. Baptism is one of those things that has split the church into many unique denominations. People have arguements on both sides of the conversation. Here's my personal take.

I'm not sure where the baptism of babies started. I haven't read it anywhere in the bible. Baptism is supposed to be an outward symbol of an inner change. Which would indicate that it would be by choice, to someone who is old enough to make that choice. But, having said all of that. The infact baptism is important too. That is more for the parents and the community, to make a committment to God about the child. Its more of a dedication of the child to God.
With all of that said.....I was baptized as a child, not an adult.

that's just my personal thinking on all of it. You can quickly get yourself into an arguement that will lead no-where on this one. Its one of those things that can draw you focus more to the arguement than to what you're really arguing about.
