Exodus 22

29 “Do not hold back offerings from your granaries or your vats.[g]
“You must give me the firstborn of your sons.

Most of this chapter is filled with rules like the previous chapter establishing laws and order for society.  This little verse tucked in here reminds me not to hold on too tight to what he has given me.

A similar verse in Proverbs 3:9-10 says give him your first fruits and your granaries and vats will be overflowing.  As the Thanksgiving and Christmas approaches I like the reminder to be generous to Him and those around me with the gifts he has given Gina and me.

  1. We've been going thru a series at church called Rice and Beans. Its meant to help us realize how fortunate we are, and to not hold on too tightly to the things. Part of the premise is to eat only Rice and Beans this week, and to give the money that we would have spent on food, to charity to help feed the hungry. I tell you what......its HARD! I've cheated so many times, I can't even tell you. It has really made me think about how lucky I am to live in this country and to have a good job. I've been talking to Max and Ben a lot about entitlement, and the fact that we don't really deserve any of what we have. I think picking that verse out of this chapter was perfect. To be honest, I didn't even catch it. Even with the focus this week on giving, I still didn't catch it.
