Daniel 1

12 “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink...15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food.

This chapter appears to be mostly setup so I don't have any major takeaways.  The part about the 10 day diet test did catch my eye for some reason.  So going vegetarian for 10 days made a difference they could see.  We go to Cabo in January, so there is time for me to go on a quick veggie diet to start looking healthier.

I don't think we are supposed to be testing God but maybe trying to live by the principles he gives us and then stopping after a period and taking note of how our lives look differently when we do this a good thing to do?  Maybe its a way to evangelize too?  speaking with someone about tithing for a period and see how you feel different....for example

that's it.  I was going to take us back to the NT but with only 4 days until Christmas I figured we could just continue in the OT.  Maybe we can get through daniel by early January.

hope all is well.

Ezekiel 48

This is a tough one to get any nuggets out of.
I suppose we could look at the specific instructions that God is laying out here.  I don't feel like I get that much direction, or have that level of his involvement.  That is something that I'm certain, I am dis-abling with my own broken-ness.  I strive for that interaction.

I hope you got something better than I, today.

Ezekial 47

8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah,[b] where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh.

I wish I had more time to study on this one.   I did not realize the the Dead Sea is a higher saline content than the oceans. Its so high animal life cannot floursih, hence the name.  There is something here intriguing to me but I can't put my finger on it.  Its something with the perfect connection of God's word all woven together.

Jesus spoke of drinking water--John 4:10 “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water”

I believe this is all connected together.  The Holy Spirit the living water we need in side us to flourish and make us fresh just like the fresh water running into the Dead Sea making salty water fresh.

I know there is more here...

Ezekial 46

13 “‘Every day you are to provide a year-old lamb without defect for a burnt offering to the Lord; morning by morning you shall provide it.

This morning I am reminded to give God my best everyday.  Whether it is in effort or from the resources he has provided me.  Don't just donate old stuff to Goodwill and feel like you have done something special.  Go out an purchase some brand new stuff and give it to someone who needs it.  Don't just give offering at church from what is left over.  Give at least 10% from the first fruits and do it happily not begrudgingly.

probably not the point of today's chapter but in this Christmas season its the thought that crossed my mind.

Ezekial 45

9-12 “This is the Message of God, the Master: ‘I’ve put up with you long enough, princes of Israel! Quit bullying and taking advantage of my people. Do what’s just and right for a change. Use honest scales—honest weights and honest measures. Every pound must have sixteen ounces. Every gallon must measure four quarts. The ounce is the basic measure for both. And your coins must be honest—no wooden nickels!

So whether it is Princes or the politician in a democracy like the US those in power let it go to their heads and take advantage of their constituents.  But God is paying attention and in due time the tables will turn.  The meek will inherit the earth.

Ezekial 44

2 The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it. It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it.

This verse captured my attention but I didn't know where to go with it.  I went to Tom's blog and he wrote a bit on what he has seen in person.  His last sentence is how I often feel watching the news, trying to make connections but not trying to over read into today's situations in the middle east.

I'm gonna go a little lite hearted today.

Let them consider its perfection, 11 and if they are ashamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design

What I see here is that God is a "designer"........just like me.   He appreciates and values the perfection of his design and idea.  BOOM!

Ezekiel 41

WOW!  So much detail here.  I'm trying to come up with a good message to be taken from it.

The thing that strikes me is how detailed it really is.  In other words, God is giving directions down to the minutia about how the temple should be constructed.  I'm not thinking as much about why, as I am about how involved he is.  I tend to think of God as not being interested in the details, as much as the big picture.  But, that is clearly not the case here, and it probably isn't the case with our lives.

Sometimes I don't even pray about things, just because I think its too small for him.....or not worth his time.  What he is illustrating here that he is intimitely interested and involved.  Now, it probably doesn't hurt that he is directing the look of the very thing that will be the symbol of his presence.  But, in some ways......we are his temple.  Right?

doing some serious Tuesday rambling here.

Ezekial 40

4 The man said to me, “Son of man, look carefully and listen closely and pay attention to everything I am going to show you, for that is why you have been brought here. Tell the people of Israel everything you see.

So shortly after this sentence the author shares paragraph after paragraph of detailed measurements.  I must admit after the first one I was not paying attention to everything that was being revealed.  By the end I was skimming not picking up any specific detail just generalities of descriptions like now we are onto the north then south gate, etc.

So I'm sure this is not the message of this chapter but it occurs to me that God has given us his Word in the bible. I should be paying attention to everything he shows me in his Word.  I should then be sharing what he has revealed to me with all those I know and interact with in my life.

My thoughts took a twist I didn't expect after skimming this chapter.  I need to avoid skimming, dig deep, understand the details then share them.

Ezekial 39

27 When I have brought them back from the nations and have gathered them from the countries of their enemies, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of many nations. 28 Then they will know that I am the Lord their God, for though I sent them into exile among the nations, I will gather them to their own land, not leaving any behind.

This is why I really don't worry about some of the craziness in the world too much, I know in the end God will take care of business.  Imagine how those on the wrong side of the fence will feel as they see the tables turn and God restoring his people against the will of those who are trying to destroy them.  How long before this happens only Giod knows, but I trust that he will do what he says he's going to do.

Ezekial 38

18 This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign Lord.

In 1948 the nation of Israel became an independent state again, I think this is a start to fulfiling prophesy about Israel and Jews returning from being scattered.  The bible talks about an attack from the North.  I know during the cold war people thought maybe Russia was the nation from the north that would attack.  I don't know who it is, but I'm comforted by his promise that it will be unsuccessful.

The middle east is constantly a wreck, probably during all periods of times people could connect the dots to possible end times.  I have never really worried about it, figuring it is inevitable because it is part of God's plan.  But I still find it fascinating to try to pick up the clues of how todays society may or may not be fitting in with the prophecies of thousands of years ago.

Ezekiel 37

This one may be a stretch...but, hear me out.  I know this isn't the intent of the chapter, but I did feel nudged today, and here's my prophecy...hahaha.

So many times in life, we find ourselves in a storm.  Or in a tough situation, or even in a spot that we think we can't get out of.  It doesn't even need to be something big.  Just a situation where we feel trapped.  But, God is so much bigger than that.  In this chapter he takes the most literal interpretation of a bad situation, being the dried out, bleached bones.  There's probably no worse condition that a person could be in right?.......and he breathes life back into them, and completely changes their situation.  He does it through Ezekiel in this case, but really the important thing is that he can do it.  He can do anything.  He saw those bones.  He knew the story.  He was there.  He was waiting for his plan to be fulfilled. (just like Israel, which the bones are the metaphor for)

My lesson for the day.  Don't underestimate the power of God, or his involvement in my situation.  Whatever that may be.  Nothing is too big, or too small for God to work in.

Ezekial 36

11 I will increase the number of people and animals living on you, and they will be fruitful and become numerous. I will settle people on you as in the past and will make you prosper more than before. Then you will know that I am the Lord.

I know we will not know when the end times are coming, it will be a surprise.  But he did provide us prophesy for some reason and it is interesting to see words written thousands of years ago about a fate that probably seemed impossible at the time come true.  Maybe there will be some people who recognize the end times?  Maybe it is more of a collective statement to say that society won't know its coming.  it seems like if someone is studying closely they will be able to discern the fulfillment from prophesy from mere similarities to actual fulfillment of prophesy.  Either way it is fascinating to read the old words and see how some of it has unfolded already.

5 “‘Because you harbored an ancient hostility and delivered the Israelites over to the sword at the time of their calamity, the time their punishment reached its climax, 6 therefore as surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I will give you over to bloodshed and it will pursue you. Since you did not hate bloodshed, bloodshed will pursue you.

So you reap what you sow is my take.  I read in some research how the prophesies in this chapter played out over the next 100-500 years.  Edom is now desolate.  His word is true.

I'm in a rut again with these chapters, I find them interesting historically but they all have a similar flavor so pulling out new nuggets or lessons to take away is challenging.  maybe you have spotted something more inciteful?

I believe he just gave the promise that God himself would come to earth to save his lost sheep---us.  Then hundreds of years later he did it when Jesus was born.  I started off this morning speed reading and I think I almost blew by this major prophesy listening more literally to the words than recognizing his message in it.  By the end he makes it really clear we are his sheep and I am thankful.

What a great promise he gave and has fulfilled.  I really love this chapter.

Ezekial 33

7 “Son of man, I have made yoy a watchman for the people of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me. 8 When I say to the wicked, ‘You wicked person, you will surely die,’ and you do not speak out to dissuade them from their ways, that wicked person will die for[a] their sin, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

Though Jesus has come and we are now saved through him, it seems this responsibility that is presented in the Old Testament must carry some weight yet today.  We have a responsibility to share that Jesus is the only way to eternal life.  I'm not sure of the consequences for not sharing but given this passage and the consistency of God I would think our silence would not go unnoticed.

The versus immediately before this talk of the majestic tree and the statement that I, God, made it.  I see this as another reminder to be humble.  There is nothing we have that is from our own doing.  He gave us every capability we have and he wants us to use those gifts to give him glory not give ourselves glory.  Pride is dangerous.

As I mentioned yesterday I wish I had time to research on my own rather than relying on others and I don't like to get spoon fed opinions of others pro or con to the bible.  I am always fascinated by the linkages of the bible from past to present and the perfect harmony that I hear when I do have time to dig in and connect the dots on my own.

9 Egypt will become a desolate wasteland. Then they will know that I am the Lord.
“‘Because you said, “The Nile is mine; I made it, 10 therefore I am against you and against your streams, and I will make the land of Egypt a ruin and a desolate waste from Migdol to Aswan, as far as the border of Cush.

As we have talked about before, there is a danger in pride.  Thinking the things we have or the positions we have attained in society, work, etc. are our own doing.  To the extent we get a little too high on ourselves we may find The Maker of the universe against us like the pharaohs.

I wish I had more time to study the history that goes along with the timing of these prophecies by Ezekial.  I imagine there is a lot to dig into.  I did a little research but you get many aetheist trying to disprove the bible.  I'm not afraid of challenge but I also don't want to feed my head with their doubts without and equally educated and opposing view from a theologian that has also studied history in depth.

25 “‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: When I gather the people of Israel from the nations where they have been scattered, I will be proved holy through them in the sight of the nations. Then they will live in their own land, which I gave to my servant Jacob.

I know we will not know when the end times are here, but reading chapters like this makes it seem like we should have some pretty clear clues.  I wonder what it will look like when the nations are gathered back in Israel.  What will the turn of events be, or am I missing it and it has already happened?  The next verse talks of their living in saftey which watching the news does not seem to be their life today.

I am struggling with finding nuggets from these chapters to apply to my life.  I guess in today's chapter the early part I can relate to thinking I'm in control and that the gifts in my life are of my own doing not from God.  I think I do get that, though I'm sure my actions do not always illustrate to God that I know he is the source of all my blessings.

CONCLUSION
So accurate were the prophecies made by Ezekiel that skeptics were forced to suggest a later date for his writings. Yet, such a later date cannot be maintained, and the admission of Ezekiel’s accuracy stands as irrefutable evidence of the prophet’s divine inspiration. With the penetrating gaze that can only be maintained by the Divine, God looked hundreds of years into the future and instructed Ezekiel precisely what to write so that in the centuries following the predictions, the fulfillment of every detail of the prophet’s words could be denied by no honest student of history. “When the word of the prophet comes to pass, the prophety will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent” (Jeremiah 28:9). Ezekiel’s accurate prophecy adds yet another piece of insurmountable evidence to the fact that “all Scripture is inspired of God” (2 Timothy 3:16).

I didn't get this one at all.  The first part is another metaphor for how God is going to punish Jerusalem, with the picture of the meat in the fire.
The second part, I'm completely lost.  What does Ezekiels reaction to his wife dying have to do with God?  I'm trying to figure out what his lack of reaction would have said to the people, and how that would benefit, or point toward God?

35 “Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Since you have forgotten me and turned your back on me, you must bear the consequences of your lewdness and prostitution.”

Immoral sex takes center stage again.  In this chapter it is somewhat X rated in its details, I'm not sure why it goes into such descriptions but God shares repeatedly throughout the word the dangers and negative implications of immoral sexual behavior.  He has given us a great gift if shared between a man and woman inside the bounds of a married.  Outside of his design for it, it will destroy your world.  (see a long list of public figures and likely a long list of people you know that are no more famous than you and me).

This destructive behavior has been around virtually since the beginning.  Its probably not going away but we certainly have clear direction and repeated examples to tell us to stay away from such behavior.

29 Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust?

As i read this it made me think the way of the Israelites is no different than Americans.  It seems every year that passes culturally we move a step further away from personal accountability.  Generally speaking people feel like someone else owes them something, society or the government should provide for them.  Peoples actions and choices have consequences, but no one wants to have to live with the choices they make.

God is like, really life isn't fair?  really I gave you life and asked in return you follow a few rules, that's not fair?  He's like come on give me a break.  He doesn't want anyone to die a permanent death but he gives us the opportunity to make choices...we have the opportunity also to live by the consequences of those choices.  In the days they are reading about they needed to follow his laws and repent from their sins.  We need to choose Jesus and should also repent from our sins.  why would we think this is too much to ask?

In spite of the adulteress mess of a life Jerusalem has lived, in the end God will wipe away these sins.  I find it interesting He uses adultery and sexual immorality to illustrate how disobedient Jerusalem had been behaving.  It seems this kind of activity is about as despicable as anything people could do to defile their relationship with him.  I don't think this is the message of this chapter but it does show how damaging that kind of lifestyle is to a person and their relationships.  He is showing how the Jews stomped on their relationship with him in the worst way, but in the end they will benefit from his Grace.

5 If it was not useful for anything when it was whole, how much less can it be made into something useful when the fire has burned it and it is charred?
This one is scary to me.
If we allow ourselves to be "thrown into the fire", or allow ourselves to be used in a manner that isn't what God intended.....it makes it much more difficult for him to use us?  Is that what its saying?  I don't like that at all.  I mess it up everyday!
I was always under the impression that no matter your past or your circumstance, God can use it for his glory.  And no matter how charred you are, he can still use us.
Maybe what this is saying is that our "charring" limits the scope of when/where he can use us.

“‘Therefore this is what the Sovereign Lord says: Because of your false words and lying visions, I am against you, declares the Sovereign Lord.

Its interesting to think back to these days and what life might have been like on a daily basis.  What gave any particular prophet his power and why did anyone list to him versus Ezekial or anyone else?  Maybe it was messages of false hope that cause people to give money to hear more---I guess we have that today too.

The one thing I did take away from this chapter was the seriousness of making false declarations on behalf of God.  He knows we are sinners and will screw up and not follow his commands and he has sent Jesus to pay for this fact.  But to actively suggest something on God's behalf that we know is not true seems to go a step farther and not only would we be disciplined but God is against anyone who does so.  Not sure my thought is on the mark but I wouldn't want God against me thats for sure.

Chapter 10 was as Tom explained a continuation of Ch9 and while I enjoy the image I struggle to find a specific takeaway or ah ha moment.

Chapter 11 was similar as well, but the first few word her caught my attention.  He did as he was commanded.  I want to be like that as well.  I've been praying for God to show me how he wants to use me and praying that when he shows me that I am willing to do it.  My problem is I don't get to the second part because I don't ever feel (not saying he's not showing me) like I am being shown a path.  Ezekial was so clear, he says repeated 'the word of the Lord came upon me'.

I want to have an experience like that...or at least I think I do.

8:7 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the people of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually arouse my anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose!

9:10 So I will not look on them with pity or spare them, but I will bring down on their own heads what they have done.

When we live our lives without honoring God and replacing him without care or thought for our own idols we should not be surprised  by the consequences at the end of our lives here on earth.  He says he is not going to pity us, we are going to get what we deserve.  Now of course we can't earn our way out of our actions but we can repent and work our hardest not to do detestable things and most importantly seek Jesus and ask him into our hearts and to save us.

I read through both chapters....and I don't have any particular verse or segment that stood out, but I think this tact that God is taking is new.  I can't remember a time when God instructed the killing of his people, due to their sin.  In the message version, it reads "7-8 He told the executioners, “Desecrate the Temple. Fill it with corpses. Then go out and continue the killing.” So they went out and struck the city."
Can you remember this happening any other time?
It seems the people have pushed God WAY past his boiling point.  He keeps saying, you think that's bad?.....I'll show you even worse.

Again, in these chapters, the decriptions are really crazy.  The liquid metal....fire for legs, and he talks about reaching out of something that "looked like a hand"

crazy reading.

Ezekiel 6-7

There's a pretty consistent theme that comes through in these chapters.  God is going to completely destroy the Israelites, the people, the city, the riches, the livestock....everything.  In the first paragraph of chapter 6 he talks a lot about the idols that the people had constructed.
5 I will lay the dead bodies of the Israelites in front of their idols, and I will scatter your bones around your altars.

I think its REALLY important for us to remember that God is a jealous God.  You can almost predict the future for the Israelites....the are saved by God, and then the wander themselves into destruction...then God saves them and they wander again.  It must look like a futile pattern to God.  It really angers him when we replace him with something man-made, or with anything at all.  It drives him crazy to the point that he will destroy us.  I don't think I live my life with the extreme mindset.  I am not creating a golden staute that I build an altar for, and worship.....but, I do struggle with replacing God with my own plan, or with my own ambition, or with a desire for materism, or with my own family.  I let things get in front of God everyday!  I'm more aware of it lately, and am working on it.

Ezekiel 5

Whoa!
This is a pretty scary prophecy.
17 I will send famine and wild beasts against you, and they will leave you childless. Plague and bloodshed will sweep through you, and I will bring the sword against you. I the Lord have spoken.

Lots of horrible things are about be befall Jerusalem.  There is a lot of imagery here, that I can only assume would mean more to that time than it does to me.  I don't understand the cutting of the hair, and splitting it up into thirds....and then doing such specific things to it.  The only thing I can grasp at, is that letting your hair grow seemed to be a thing that has come up in other books, almost as a committment to God and living his lifestyle.  Now he is asking to shave the head and the beard.  Maybe this represents a break with the "detestable people".

Ezekiel 4

15 “Very well,” he said, “I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement.”

GROSS!

shortest one yet.

Ezekial 3

“Again, when a righteous person turns from their righteousness and does evil, and I put a stumbling block before them, they will die. Since you did not warn them, they will die for their sin. The righteous things that person did will not be remembered, and I will hold you accountable for their blood.

So Ezekial had a pretty high standard God gave him...share the words of God with the people or be accountable for their wrong doings.  I believe we are saved through Jesus blood not through our own act of sharing God's word.  But at the same time it seems learning from Ezekial that not only should we want to share God's word with others, we have a responsibility to share what we learn in his word with others.

Ezekiel 1-2

Time to kick off another book--

Ch 1-27 I saw that from what appeared to be his waist up he looked like glowing metal, as if full of fire, and that from there down he looked like fire; and brilliant light surrounded him.

Consistently throughout the bible when there are visions of encounters with God it is describe with brilliantly bright light.  It must really go beyond what human words can describe.  Those who experience it seem changed forever, they have an absolute faith that cannot be challenged or weakened by any humans.

Ch 2- You must speak my words to them, whether they listen or fail to listen, for they are rebellious.

And so Ezekiel is about to be given revelations he must share that are probably not going to be well received.  But I guessing his experience in ch. 1 was so burned into his being that there is no doubt in his mind he needs to share all that is revealed to him.

I am imaging if I could grab onto even a sliver of this level of faith the impact God could have on those within my circle of influence.
