10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works,[e] just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.
Boy, I'm terrible at this one. There's always more to do....and I have a wife who doesn't EVER stop.....so most Sundays I'm working around the house. I do feel the impacts of it in a negative way. I can recognize that I need to rest. Reading the portion that talks about never receiving God's rest, because of not observing a day of rest...that one hits home to me. I'm a person that is ALWAYS tired. To think that I might never be granted rest in God, because I'm not taking time to rest in him here....that's a scary thought.

ReplyDeleteCreating Space for Self and Community to Find Rest in Christ -- This is the vision statement of our church.
As we searched and prayed about our vision statement we were called to a need in our suburban US city life to create opportunities for finding rest in Christ. Everyone on our team was exhausted. We all filled our time with work, running to kids extracurricular events, etc. with limited time in God's word or doing His work.
We also discovered rest could mean doing nothing for a period of time. But it could also be making space for doing something you enjoy for yourself or it could even be work. For example, I would leave work and rush to our Governing Board meeting once a month. Exhausted and not really wanting to meet, but after a 4hour meeting and doing God's work together I felt far more energized than when I arrived.
Interestingly I shared about my friend in these meetings 2yrs ago and very recently at a breakfast. My friend and his family would also seem to rest on Sunday. I would stop up to see if he could play, but often on these days it was a break or rest from those activities. That friend of course was Todd Parker. It must have made an impact on me because I remember it 40 years later. Your parents probably had some wisdom. They are probably smarter than us, but on top of that maybe they were trying to follow God's instruction for them. hmmm

ps--sorry I'm a little thin lately. Between vacations and some early meetings I've been missing more frequently than I like. next week will be like that too then I should be more regular
