I'm gonna skip the obvious, and talk about Simeon.
He had been promised to see the Messiah before he died. I'm wondering why God chose to work it that way? Was it a fulfillment of prophesy that Simeon would not die before he came? Did everyone know that God had this agreement with Simeon, therefore alerting them to the Messiah?.......I don't know. I'm glad that God is a lot smarter than me. I'm sure there was a very well thought thru reason. I just seems a little random on the surface.
I like how it reads from verse 27.
When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”
That is a great picture, after reading your comments I did a little research wondering if there was any other comments in the bible about Simeon which I found none. But other bible scholars had the same view as you, Simeon had such a connection through the Holy Spirit and prayer that he immediately recognized Jesus for who he was. So I don't know why I bother with research, I have my own personal scholar blogging with me. ;) Maybe you can also shed light on the following:
ReplyDeletev19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.
v51 has almost the identical statement. One is the birth of Jesus and the other is after they found him at the temple.
Is there a parenting lesson on soaking up the moments with our kids? Or something deeper?
That's a really good question. I've given it some thought,(I've got lots of time) and I have a couple stabs at it......Im not convinced if they are right or not.....but here goes.
ReplyDelete1. Mary was the only one that KNEW he was the Son of God. She knew there was a larger plan in place, than hers...as she sees the things happening that are moving the baby and boy along the path the ultimate destination (of which she probably doesn't know about)she makes mental notes, with a mother's love...or ponders them in her heart. make sense?
2. The second theory is that she ponders the first time when others come to recognize him as the Son of God. The second time is when they find him in the temple, and she realizes that he is no longer under her control. He is starting to function as the Son of God, and not the Son of Mary. make sense?
I don't know.....what do ya think?
