Genesis 15

15 After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision:
“Do not be afraid, Abram.
    I am your shield,[a]
    your very great reward.[b]

I took another read through this today.  Still struggle to get something our of it.  I like this verse, but it is followed immediately by questions from Abram.  That is the only take I had that when you hear God it is okay to ask questions, have a dialogue.  Maybe it wasn't so much doubt but wanting to gain understanding of what God was telling him?

  1. 9 So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each three years old, along with a dove and a young pigeon.”

10 Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds, however, he did not cut in half.

17 When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces. 18 On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram

This pictured seemed strange to me. So, I did a little research. Turns out, back in the day. If 2 people wanted to make a committment to each other, they would cut an animal in half and then both walk between the halves. That's the picture that is happening here. God commanded Abram to sacrifice the animals, and then the both moved between then creating the covenant.
Very interesting.....I never would have guessed.

    Who knew?
