Numbers 25

13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

My observations are pretty straight forward today.  Jesus has made atonement for all our sins, so no need for us to take matters into our own hands like Phinehas.  But I did take note that someone like Phinehas pleased God by his desire to honor him.  I also took note of the fact that it was sexual immorality that is so displeasing to God to the point of burning anger and over 24,000 people losing their lives as a result of their own actions.

It obviously continues today and truly seems to be getting worse here in the US.  It seems only a matter of time before we self destruct as a nation as we continue down this path.

  1. You know what struck me this morning? In all of these chapters, it seems that God is so angry that he is going to wipe out all of the Israelites. And then something, or someone convinces him to spare them, and give them yet ANOTHER chance. I wonder what history would have looked like then? Would his covenant to Abraham have been broken if he would have done it? There always seems to be someone arguing on the side of the people, so heavily, that God relents. Interesting thought.

I agree with you on the sexual immorality. I think there are 2 eternal things that trip us up. Sex and money. Those two things are the slipperiest of slopes. We get caught up in them quicker than anything else.
